How to create code for Craigslist

Some common rules for creating code for Craigslist.com site is

1. Use HTML Codes that are inside <BODY> and </BODY> tag of a HTML document for posting to craigslist.

2. Use inline styles instead of class selector. For example
Use <div style=”padding-left:10px;background-color:#666666;”></div> instead of
<div class=”style1″></div> and define that style in an external style sheet.

3. Image tag used with src attribute as a full path to the image. For example
Use <img src=”http://static.php.net/www.php.net/images/php.gif&#8221; /> instead of <img src=”images/php.gif” />. Because image is hosted in our server and the code is rendering from craigslist server.

4. Links to external sites not supported by craigslist (contact craigslist team to do so).

5. CL not supports Javascript, applets, Flash, or other embedded non-HTML content.

6. http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/faq

7. Don’t include “font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;” as inline style. When we put the above attribute in the inline style definition CL processor neglects that style definition as whole. For example
<div style=”font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;height:60px;background-color:#999999;width:250px;”>PHP</div>

The above code craigslist interpreted as <div>PHP</div>

The following are the list of attributes not supported by the CL
a.    font-size
b.    font-family

For overcoming this problem we can use the following type of code for font size and color specification.
<font size=”1″ face=”Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif”><div style=”width:300px;height:100px;color:#FF0000;background:#999966;”>PHP</div></font>
We can use <strong> tag for bold a particular text.

8. All the inline style attributes started with margin, whose style rules are removed by the CL code validation

<div style=”margin:5px;width:300px;height:100px;color:#FF0000;background:#999966;”>PHP</div>
Outputs as <div>PHP</div>

So for margin purpose we can use an outer padding div for the division to which we are going to apply margin.

9. Problem in the color attribute used. We cannot use the #FFFFFF [White] color for example if we put the following code
<div style=”color:#FFFFFF;width:300px;height:100px;background:#999966;”>PHP</div>
CL validation neglects the style and the output becomes
<div>PHP</div>

For overcoming this we can use a slight variation of white color #FFFFFD can be used.

Background white color also not allowed by CL validation.
background:#FFFFFF;
